Tonight’s Conservative PPB

PPBs fascinate me. On a general note though, I dislike the straight piece to camera – nothing televisual in it. Always seems to be a waste of the opportunity provided by the medium.

Overall, this has more than a hint of ‘Labour isn’t working’ about it. They need to be careful about this – lest the Tories connive to invite broader comparisons with the ‘Winter of Discontent’. Any other thoughts?

This ppp includes an attack on Labour over their performance in Government. So also was the “Labour isn’t working” campaign poster which you have referred to. However, the similarity between the two pieces of campaigning stops there.

What the hell has an appeal to all to work together in the National interest got to do with the Winter of discontent?

    Ah Seymour…

I felt a section of that PPB – the doomladen filmed piece at the start of the embedded video was reminiscent of this broadcast from 1983 (a celebration of the worst of Labour in The Winter of Discontent).

The central message I took away from last night’s PPB was that Labour wasn’t working; that we’re in turmoil. So it was reasonable for me to say that there was more than hint etc etc…

And in the present economic context (recession, public sector cuts, souring industrial relations), I felt it is unwise for a sitting government to offer a PPB frontloaded with doom-mongering.

The problem being that you succeed better at painting a picture of terminal problems than you do in persuading people you have solutions to surmount them. There was a balance to achieve, and I’m sure the creators of the broadcast were aware of it. I felt it fell just short of the mark.

Not an unreasonable position really. But you disagree, fair enough.
